Florida tax problems

The Florida Department of Revenue will begin their collection process when a taxpayer fails to make a payment, does not pay the balance owed in full, files taxes late, fails to file a tax return or owes additional money from an audit. Once a delinquency notice is issued, penalties and interest will continue to accrue until the entire tax amount is paid off. If the debt remains unpaid for 90 days a 10% collection processing fee will be charged.

Like the IRS, the state of Florida offers various solutions to problems that taxpayers may have. Below are the various methods that can be used to resolve delinquent taxes and other tax problems with the state of Florida.

If you Receive a Delinquency Notice

  • If you can pay in full: The quickest and easiest way to pay your bill is to pay it online. If you have outstanding tax returns it is important to file those as soon as possible. If you don’t already have an e-file account with Florida, you can enroll and a user ID and password will be sent within 48 hours. Once you have an account you will be able to file and pay electronically.
  • Can’t pay Florida taxes in full: If you cannot pay your taxes in full you must call your local service center or call the 800 number on the tax assessment notice. When you call you must request a stipulated time payment agreement. The state of Florida will require you to provide financial documents that prove your inability to pay the tax debt in full. The state of Florida requires that you are prepared to pay a minimum of 25% of the amount owed right away and the full balance within a year.
